Transshipment Facility – Phase I, II & III
Whiffen Head, NL   

Description: The Newfoundland Transhipment Terminal, located in Placentia Bay, serves as a crude oil transfer and storage facility servicing the Hibernia offshore oil fields. Pennecon Heavy Civil supplied the following components to the project: 100 ton mooring dolphins, a loading platform, precast manholes, roadway link trestles, and a concrete ring wall for the tank farm with a total value of construction at over $35 million.




St. Lawrence 27MW Wind Energy Project
St. Lawrence, NL     

Description: Pennecon was awarded the design-build contract for Newfoundland and Labradors first commercial wind farm ever erected in Newfoundland and Labrador. The 27MW Wind Energy Project will be located near the town of St. Larwence on the Burin Peninsula.




Rattling Brook Penstock Replacement
Norris Arm, NL    

Description: The Rattling Brook Hydroelectric Development is the largest generation station owned by Newfoundland Power (NP).  It is located approximately 50km west of Gander in the town of Norris Arm. The Project includes the demolition and disposal of the existing 1700m woodstave penstock and replacement of a new 2896mm diameter steel penstock.  The contract also includes the construction of concrete piers, anchor blocks and a new access road.




Activated Sludge & Water Treatment Project
Grand Falls-Windsor, NL  

Description:  The Activated Sludge and Water Treatment Project was a $7.5 million dollar project located at the Abitibi Consolidated Inc. paper mill in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador.




Precast Tunnel Structures, Canada Line Project
Vancouver, BC     

Description: Pennecon Limited was awarded a $14 million contract to manufacture precast tunnel ring segments for the Canada Line Project in Vancouver. This work is being done at ABC Precast & Ready Mix Ltd., part of the Pennecon Heavy Civil Division located in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.




Fairview Container Terminal Conversion
Prince Rupert Port Authority, BC    

Description: This project, valued at approximately $50 million, is a joint venture between Pennecon’s Heavy Civil Division and BA Blacktop of Vancouver. Work commenced in May 2006 and was completed in August 2007 on-time and on-budget. The project involved upgrading the existing site into a state-of-the-art transshipment facility with modern technologies including: electrical equipment, fuel facility, overhead cranes, wastewater treatment, high mast lighting, water and sewer facilitator and paving of the entire 60 acre site.





Wastewater Treatment facility
St. John's, NL    

Description: Approximately 2000 metric tonnes of rebar are being fabricated at the plant facility, shipped to the site and installed according to engineer’s specifications.




Eastern Health – Health Sciences Centre
St. John's, NL    

Description: This project required concrete pumping and delivery of high density concrete used to construct the new radiation unit for the Dr. H.Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.




Newfoundland Hydro
Granite Lake, NL   

Description: Granite Canal is located on the south coast of Newfoundland. Pennecon Concrete supplied in excess of 20,000 cubic metres of concrete in this remote and environmentally sensitive area using our portable plant. Challenges of the Granite Canal project included the location and adverse working conditions. 100% of the concrete supplied for this project was pumped. Pennecon Concrete also supplied aggregate for this project.




Terra Nova FPSO
Offshore, NL   

Description: With expertise in the rigors of supplying aggregate to the offshore petroleum industry, Pennecon Concrete shipped in excess of 300,000 tonnes of aggregate to the Terra Nova oil field over a two year period. The rock was used for securing lines and as an insulator on the seabed. Bay Bulls Marine Terminal was constructed, by Pennecon Limited, as a shore-based facility to cater to Pennecon Concrete's offshore contract. Pennecon is currently expanding the facility with room to develop specialized handling and transshipment services.




St. John’s Airport Authority
St. John's, NL   

Description: A milestone project for the city, Pennecon supplied over 25,000 cubic meters of concrete materials for runway resurfacing and lengthening, buttons, and ramps.  Pennecon Concrete supplied all concrete for the new terminal building and the exterior architectural precast




Mile One Centre
St. John's, NL   

Description: Mile One Centre is the newest sports and entertainment venue of its size in Atlantic Canada. It is home to numerous big name concerts and trade shows each year. Pennecon Concrete manufactured and installed precast seating structures for this state of the art 6,000-seat facility located in downtown St. John’s. Pennecon Concrete also supplied custom made forms and moulds for this unique facility.




Atlantic Shopping Centre - Avalon Mall
St. John's, NL  

Description: Pennecon Concrete installed 3 X 3 box culverts, the largest box culvert placed in Newfoundland.  Adding to the challenge of this project, the chambers were installed in a developed area, therefore, work had to be completed during set hours of the day. Because of this, we were working under strict deadlines to ensure regular operations of the shopping centre.




Regency Park Drive
Clayton Park West, Halifax, NS    

Description: This project was handled by Sackville Concrete, who supplied concrete for a 190 unit apartment building in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Local developer, Steve Hanias, built this 12-storey building without the use of a stationary crane, but was able to seal a deal to bring in the largest boom pump in eastern Canada. A 52-meter boom was used to place concrete on the seventh floor and above, which required 11,000 cubic meters of concrete. This project was completed between the fall of 2005 and the winter of 2006.

Global Santa Fe Glomar Grand Banks Maintenance and Refit

Description: Pennecon was responsible for drilling maintenance and refits for this project.




TransOcean Henry Goodrich Inspection Survey and Refit (mechanical, hydraulic, structural and electrical

Trade: Coatings, inspection, electrical, structural, instrumentation, piping, hydraulic, mechanical overhaul and testing, NDT testing and 3500 HP thruster motor electrical, anode replacement, top drive overhauls and five year inspection

Description: Owned by TransOcean Canada Co., this project required Pennecon’s expertise for exterior work, anode replacement, top drive overhauls, motor rewinding, painting, mechanical inspection, NDT testing, and 3500 HP motor electrical, mechanical overhaul, and testing.  A five year inspection was also required.




Terra Nova Turnaround
Rotterdam, The Netherlands       

Trade: Hydraulic

Description: This major project for Pennecon Energy had numerous phases. On the voyage to Rotterdam, we did a complete removal of main transfer deck using clamshell cutters. Once we reached The Netherlands, we prepared a flushing procedure for a complete offshore flushing of the water injection pump lubrication system, then performed a complete re-certification of all pressure vessels aboard the Terra Nova FPSO.




Abitibi Consolidated
Grand Falls, NL

Trade: Upgrades, refits, installations

Description: In this 2002 project for Abitibi Consolidated, we installed a hydraulic governor system during a refit of the Grand Falls Mill.  During the refit, we also completed chemical cleaning, hydrotesting, and hot oil flushing of the hydraulic governor piping system.




Newfoundland Power
Cape Broyle, NL

Trade: Fabrication, installation, construction

Description: Ozark Services Ltd. was contracted to refurbish a generating unit at Cape Broyle in 2006.  The scope of this project included the refurbishment of the generator and rotor windings with a process called CO2 or Dry-Ice Cleaning and the mechanical repair of the gates.  In addition to this scope of work Ozark Services was also engaged to perform the Dry-Ice cleaning of the NF Power generating unit at Pierre's Brook near Witless Bay.  Ozark Services Ltd. is one of the only companies in Newfoundland and Labrador that has this equipment locally and provides the cleaning process to external customers.
