Description: Pennecon Limited was awarded a $14 million contract to manufacture precast tunnel ring segments for the Canada Line Project in Vancouver. This work was completed at ABC Precast & Ready Mix Ltd., part of the Pennecon Heavy Civil Division located in Nanaimo, British Columbia. The contract is part of the Rapid Transit System, which originates from Vancouver International Airport and proceeds to downtown Vancouver. Project work involved the manufacture of precast segments for two 2,400 metre long underground (subway) tunnels. A total of 3,475 rings were produced with each ring being comprised of six individual segments which were shipped by ferry to downtown Vancouver. Shipments totaled approximately 1,400 tractor trailer loads, each weighing 40 tonnes for a total load out of 56,000 tonnes of product. To carry out work associated with this contract for the Canada Line Project a concrete batch plant and conveyor system were installed and an existing onsite building was also refurbished. Building renovations included the installation of two (2) 10t overhead cranes, 2,000,000 Btu steam generator and steam lines, computerized steam curing control system and a quality control lab. Major suppliers for the project include Allstar Rebar, LaFarge Canada, Hub City Paving, Master Builders and Penta Transport.
