MASONRY DIVISION

Pennecon Concrete's Masonry Division, located at its Concrete Products facility, is one of the oldest and largest producers of Ready Mix Concrete and Masonry Block, Retaining Wall Units and Pavers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Concrete Products has expanded and modernized its Block Production Facility to a state-of-the-art, fully automatic system, creating an environment where safety is a number one priority and risk of injury is at an all-time low. The machinery is designed to increase production while keeping the employees safe.

The new Plant is the most recent version of the Model 1600 from Columbia Machine Inc. It features full Windows-based programs with touch screens and compact logic controls. It also features a cuber that is the first of its kind in North America. The equipment includes a fully automatic transfer car system, pallet turnover, pallet scraper, clamp turnover and product splitter, all manufactured by Columbia Machine Inc. The plant also features an automatic pallet wrapper by Polybro Inc. The installation of this equipment has more than doubled production, while maintaining the same workforce. Furthermore, Concrete Products has teamed with Keystone Retaining Wall Systems to produce new product lines, some of which are the first of its kind to Newfoundland.

The existing Block Plant workers decommissioned the old plant and helped with the commissioning of the new one. Legge Surveys and Octagon Development, from Pennecon's Real Estate Division, were involved with providing the layout of equipment and foundations as well as the contractors to complete the building extensions. Capital Precast Limited, from Pennecon's Concrete Division, worked on the building extensions and interior concrete work for the steam kilns. Capital Ready Mix (CRM), also from Pennecon's Concrete Division, used its heavy equipment from its crushing operation to complete the yard transformation and to move most of the machinery into position. CRM also provided the welders to install the transfer car railing system. Concrete Products Limited supplied all the Ready Mix Concrete and pumping trucks for the renovations. Pennecon Energy Industrial Services had a team of electricians to complete a wiring job that was one of a kind for Newfoundland. PE Hydraulic Systems and PE Technical Services also provided their expertise and services in the final stages of the installation. The first concrete blocks rolled off the line July 2010.
